Outdoor Kitchen Ideas: Three Basic Questions to Answer

Written by Senor Smoke on 08.17.25

We are starting to see customers inquire about Fall outdoor kitchen projects. As these new customers visit us, they typically start with the same questions - how do we get started creating an outdoor kitchen?

What I do is ask them three questions so I can listen to their wants/needs/desires and understand what direction to lead them in.

The three questions are:

1. What is your outdoor kitchen footprint?

Are you looking for a 8 foot straight run? An L with high back bar? Two separate islands, one for cooking one for seating and refrigeration. When I understand what the footprint is the scope of the project becomes clear.

2. Will the outdoor kitchen be sitting on a patio, deck or rooftop?

Once I know what the outdoor kitchen will be sitting on I can then recommend the build type of the island - masonry, a stainless cabinet system like Danver or one of our customer ROF outdoor kitchen systems.

3. Will the outdoor kitchen operate independently from your indoor kitchen?

If the outdoor kitchen sits far from your indoor kitchen then it will need full utilities (gas-electric-water) run out to it and will likely need refrigeration...perhaps multiple cooking units. If the outdoor kitchen build is adjacent to the indoor kitchen then we can go smaller and limit the amount of components, perhaps leaving out the refrigeration and trash drawer.

There are many more questions to ask, which is one of the reasons a first visit should be at least 45 minutes to an hour...but the above three will give me enough information so I can start the recommendation process.

If you have any questions about your outdoor kitchen project please reach out. We are here to help!
